SGI IRIX Freeware

IDF and IDL for IRIX 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4

To compile anything on IRIX 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4 using gcc you must have certain libraries, headers, and tools.

The software images required, IRIX Development Foundation (IDF) and IRIX Development Libraries (IDL), are available to download below. They contain the libraries, headers and tools you need. Both IDF and IDL must be installed for the IRIX operating system you are currently running on your system.

WARNING:

  • If you currently have IRIX compilers installed on your system - DO NOT install these IDF and IDL images. Installing these images can (AND PROBABLY WILL) break your installed compilers.

  • If you have IRIX 6.5 (any version) you already have IDF and IDL CDs and you DO NOT want or need the IDF/IDL images mentioned here.

  • If you are running IRIX 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4 AND have compilers installed on your system, you already have the appropriate IDF and IDL: you DO NOT want or need these images.

Support for these images can be obtain through normal SGI support contracts (which must be purchased). There is no free support on this software. Although the questions asked on some newsgroups on the web (i.e. comp.sys.sgi.bugs, comp.sys.sgi.misc, comp.sys.sgi.admin, etc.) are often answered, the answers provided there, however useful, are unofficial.

For IRIX 6.2, 6.3 or 6.4 you need both IDF and IDL. Follow the instructions below to download this software:

  • Click the install pairs of images one-at-a-time to auto-install.

  • Shift-LEFTMOUSE Click to download each tar file (*.tardist)[1] you want, one-at-a-time. Each tar file contains an inst(1) image.

IRIX 6.2
Developement Foundation 1.2 IDF 812-0695-003 (329M)
Development Libraries IDL 812-0698-001 (226M)

IRIX 6.3
Developement Foundation 1.2 IDF 812-0696-003 (341M)
Development Libraries IDL 812-0699-001 (245M)

IRIX 6.4
Developement Foundation 1.2 IDF 812-0697-003 (341M)
Development Libraries IDL 812-0700-001(317M)

NOTE: These images are currently included with the MIPSpro 7.3 compilers. If installed on top of MIPSpro 7.2 compilers, it will break them. If you accidentally install these images over currently installed compilers, ONLY uninstalling IDF and IDL and reinstalling the images and patches for your compilers will fix your problem.

If you have trouble installing a tardist file, go to SGI/Freeware Frequently Asked Questions for various hints.

The mechanism for ordering physical CDs is not yet in place. We will announce this feature once it is available.

[1] Files ending in .tardist are nothing more nor less than a TAR(1) file. They can be extracted in the shell with the command: tar xvf filename.tardist and the installed via either inst(1) or swmgr(1).

NOTE: If you have the IDF/IDL CD's for IRIX 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4 you do not need to download the software from this page. You may now install the the IDF/IDL software and images, from CD, on multiple machines.
